To the Administration of the University of Oregon:
It has come to my attention that the University and the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation are having some difficulty in bargaining. I am writing to you to urge you to come to a fair settlement with the GTFF. GTFs on the UO campus are a vital part of this university, and, as such, they deserve to be adequately compensated.
Since the University is unable to raise GTF wages, it only seems fair that the GTFF be compensated in other ways. I understand that they are requesting a reduction in the fees they have pay, and that they sought improvements in the language governing the hiring process for GTFs. It is my further understanding that the GTFF has been unsuccessful in getting the University to agree on these issues. Can you please explain this situation to me?

To the Administration of the University of Oregon:
I am writing to express my support for the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation in their contract negotiations with the University of Oregon. I am concerned that the GTFF has been bargaining with the University for seven months and working for two months on an expired contract without reaching agreement with the University.
GTFs perform valuable work for the University and I think it is unfair for the University to expect GTFs to give back any gains they have made or give up their right to bargain a fair contract in the future. This puts the GTFF in an unfair and disadvantaged position. Moreover, the GTFF has been more than willing to compromise on many of its goals, but the University seems quite unwilling to do the same.
I believe it is in the best interest of the University of Oregon that a settlement be reached soon. I believe that the quality of education will suffer at the University if Summer GTFs are distracted by bargaining news and preparing to go out on strike.
How will the University respond to charges that you destroyed the 2004 Summer Session because you refused to come to an agreement with the UO?

To the Administration of the University of Oregon:
I am writing you to express my anger at your refusal to negotiate an even partially reasonable settlement with the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation. GTFs at the University of Oregon are an integral, necessary part of the undergraduate educational experience.
It is unconscionable that you would propose automatically taking away in two years the pittance of a financial package already on the table. Demanding that GTFs agree to a deal that doesn't even cover the cost-of-living increases (not that they are making what it costs to live in Eugene and attend the University anyway) is a slap in the face to hard working GTFs. Trying to take away fee reduction in two years only adds insult to this injury. I demand that you immediately settle a fair and equitable agreement with the GTFF. Failure to reach such an agreement will force GTFs to strike.
Your position seems very unreasonable and it seems ridiculous for the University of Oregon to goad GTFs into striking to hang onto a few dollars. Can you please explain to me why the University has taken such a position?
