[edit] Officer Reports
Hannah: Had first meeting for activities committee. Sept 20th--BBQ after the new GTFF orientation, 100 Willamette Hall. We can advertise for both international student orientation (9/19) and TEP orientation (new GTF). Plan is for 200 people. $10 a head, $15/hr to setup tables (we'll do that). Mark: we need to calla trust meeting to approve funds for the BBQ. Chris said to get a proposal together and he'll publicize it. When to have the GMM? Friday 9/29 is likely. Fall film series: Aaron said that ESSN (Eugene-Springfield solidarity network) has a library of films. Courtney says SEIU can be involved. Mark, chapter of Northwest labor/history society. Ryanne--film and media studies department. Solicits input from eboard; on future activities, how to help with existing, etc.
Ryanne: Did not get a committee together yet. Courtney reminds the Linda King should be contacted.
Jonna: Not much--electronic voting is in development. Website updating is happening. Also, computers in office all need OS reinstalled. Aaron: CGEU folks talked about wiki site, will give Jonna url.
Mark: July budget report stalled due to computer issues for Carolyn's computer. Dropped the ball on the dollar percaps.
Aaron: CGEU update--NYU's struggle is the struggle to save the academy. Bus tour across the country (but not in Oregon). GET-UP at Penn and Yale (GSOC) also trying to unionize and all three tried to beat the drum for a campaign against corporatization and casualization of the campus. Jamie Horowitz: many ways to manipulate people; sparked the idea of getting someone form he marketing department (penetrating the Lillis complex--potential for covert action) to use their skill publicizing and branching external relations. No meetings yet this summer, unfortunately. Met with Clare from ESSN. East coast people more guarded socially, difficult to interact sometimes. Did not seem to like low budget, hi-effect GTFF propaganda.
Side note: Eugene celebration. Courtney: call on celebration? Chris will do it. Side note: Aaron: 'Center for Union Facts,' the anti-union propaganda arm of the TABOR effort. Full page adds. Back to the discussion about PR people. Chris: big potential for union building.
Nick: Panel meeting on GTF effectiveness on 9/20 as well; invited by Chris Browning. Portland meeting with governor's people. Strategists telling union members how they have manufactured a good image via push polling. Scripted speech from the governor: pushed on war by Malone and gave the bring them home (sometime soon) answer. Better than H. Clinton response. Matt Swanson, AFT contact assumes our support. Malone canvassed and found that union households vote 'democrat' except for Jim Torrey. GTFF cope committee on endorsements: maybe avoid candidates and emphasize ballot initiatives? Courtney agrees 'wholeheartedly'. Chris: is there a process for endorsements? Suggests that recommendations are approved by ecouncil and then put to vote at GMM. Agenda item for next GMM. Matt Swanson: how we can help you and you can help us. How do we ensure good voter turnout among GTFF members? Should we track? Chris: typically good turnout, so not much need for intensive tracking.
Courtney: One thing: 9-16 AFT oregon executive council meeting. Courtney is supposed to attend but COPE meeting precedes 8:30am start of exec meeting. They want a report a report on State Strategic Plan.
[edit] Staff Reports
Chris: Gearing up for fall membership drive. Bulletin boards fliers and postcards. The latter sent out, the former we can help with. Chris hands out wonderful flier about how to sign people up for health care. Mark: 2 things that help to sign up members: 1) at minimum appointment difference between fair-share and membership is $3 a month 2) varying your pitch by listening to their concerns.
COCAL conference: Much moping about poor state of academic labor. We are probably the most organized section of CAL. Not seen as a movement, different bargaining sects. Vancouver was very fun.
[edit] Old business
CGEU: wait for Dave.
E-council retreat: Handout on locales. Should we subsidize Patrick coming back? Mark informs of tight budget. Patrick has not been heard from. E-council Agenda: Seem to be missing issues around hiring committee. Scattered stuff about the retreat. Talk to 2-3 people we do not know about the union. Dollar dues: Mark is on it.
New business: Scheduling each department orientation. Chris and Dave are working on it and will let us know id they need help. Separate talking points sheet will be distributed for orientations. Want to avoid that we are simply a health insurance company.
GMM: Libby is on the location issue. Ideas about the agenda? 1) Reports 2) political stuff (Nick; aside from things in office report); ask Kulongoski--lets just see if he wants to ignore us. 20min item. 3) Presenting strategic plan to members and getting them to vote on it. 20min item. 4) Vote on supporting ballot measures instead of candidates. 5) See whichever department has the most people there and give them prizes.
Baseball tickets: $15
AGEL--ask about comparative stats concerning organizer salaries and benefits so that we understand comparators when we bargain. Cost of living, health benefits, etc.
Computer equipment: Jonna requests that we approve money for an external hard drive (appx. 200GB) so that machines can be updated. Jonna moves; Aaron seconds. Approved.
